Adoption and transition
In the Netherlands, adoption is regulated in the Civil Code.
Dutch framework
In the Netherlands, adoption is regulated in the Civil Code. Adoption is open to couples (married or cohabiting) and single people who meet age, health and stability conditions. A changed sex registration does not preclude adoption.
Partner adoption and dual motherhood
In couples where one partner has transitioned, partner adoption may arise when parenthood does not arise automatically by birth. Since 2014, recognition of dual motherhood has been possible for lesbian couples; comparable arrangements may be relevant for transgender parents.
International adoption
For inter-country adoption, the rules of the Hague Adoption Convention and the regulations of the country of origin apply. Some countries do not accept adoption applications from LGBTI couples or persons with a changed sex registration.
