Possible interventions
Detransition can involve — depending on prior treatment — various interventions: stopping cross-sex hormones and possibly restarting one's own hormone production or substitution, breast reconstruction after mastectomy (relatively limited options), or complex revisions of genital surgery.
Limitations
Many changes from hormone treatment are partly or fully irreversible (voice change from testosterone, secondary hair growth, continued beard growth after laser/electrolysis, atrophy of sexual organs, loss of fertility).
Coverage
Coverage of detransition care under the basic health insurance is not explicitly regulated in the Netherlands; in practice, care is reimbursed via regular indications. Since 2022, international professional associations have paid more attention to detransition care as part of the standards of care.
