International detransition statistics

Detransition rates in the literature vary widely, from less than 1% to more than 10%.

Variation in percentages

Detransition rates in the literature vary widely, from less than 1% to more than 10%. The variation is explained by differences in definition (stopping hormones vs. returning to the original gender role vs. legal reversal), follow-up duration (short vs. long) and the composition of the study population.

Loss to follow-up

Cohort studies often have high dropout. Detransitioners are less inclined to re-contact the original clinic, so detransition rates in clinical cohorts are probably underestimated.

Recent findings

British and US data from the 2020s suggest higher detransition rates than earlier studies, possibly because the patient population changed significantly from around 2015 (more adolescent girls, more co-occurring problems).
