Electrolysis during transition

In electrolysis, a thin needle is placed individually in each hair follicle.

Technique

In electrolysis, a thin needle is placed individually in each hair follicle. An electrical current destroys the hair-forming tissue. The three main techniques are galvanic electrolysis, thermolysis and the combined blend method.

Comparison with laser

Unlike laser hair removal, electrolysis works independently of hair colour or skin colour and is the only method worldwide recognised by medical professional associations as permanent. It is however more labour-intensive and more painful, and requires more sessions.

Before vaginoplasty

In vaginoplasty using scrotal or perineal skin, complete removal of hair follicles in the skin to be transplanted is necessary. Electrolysis is the standard technique here, often required over several months to a year prior to surgery.

Reimbursement in the Netherlands

Hair removal of beard and — in preparation for genital surgery — the surgical area is reimbursed under conditions from the basic insurance with established gender dysphoria.
