Gender and feminism

Feminism is not a monolithic movement.

Different feminist currents

Feminism is not a monolithic movement. Liberal feminism focuses on equal rights and fights discrimination on the basis of sex and gender identity. Radical feminism analyses sex as the basis of women's oppression and views transgender issues critically when they touch the category of 'woman'.

Tensions

Discussions about access to sex-specific spaces (such as shelters, prisons, sport), self-identification and language (woman vs. menstruating person) lead to sharp debates within feminism.

Intersectional feminism

Intersectional feminism connects different axes of oppression (sex, ethnicity, class, sexuality, disability). Transgender people are included, with attention to their specific vulnerabilities.
