Gender and violence against women
Violence against women is defined in international treaties (such as the Istanbul Convention, 2011) as violence directed at women because they are women, or which disproportionately affects women.
Definitions
Violence against women is defined in international treaties (such as the Istanbul Convention, 2011) as violence directed at women because they are women, or which disproportionately affects women. Gender-based domestic violence, sexual violence and stalking fall under this.
Position of trans women
Transgender women experience proportionally high rates of violence and intimidation. TGEU research records transgender deaths globally, particularly among trans women of colour.
Debate
There is public debate about whether policy and statistics should integrate trans women into the category 'woman' or treat them as a separate category. Different countries make different choices.
