Legal framework

Law 164 of 1982 governed legal gender change. Since 2015, following a Constitutional Court ruling, prior surgical intervention is no longer mandatory.

Current debates

In 2024 and 2025 the Italian media and parliament raised questions about puberty blockers, partly under the influence of the Cass Review and the Italian Higher Health Council.
