In 2018 Portugal adopted a law allowing changes of name and gender in the registers on the basis of self-declaration, from the age of sixteen.

In 2018 Portugal adopted a law allowing changes of name and gender in the registers on the basis of self-declaration, from the age of sixteen. The medical diagnosis requirement was abolished.
Clinical care
Gender care is offered in a few university hospitals, including in Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto. Waiting times are long, comparable to those in other European countries.
