Ley Trans (2023)
In February 2023 Spain adopted the Ley para la igualdad real y efectiva de las personas trans. The law allows legal gender change on the basis of self-declaration from the age of sixteen without medical assessment, and contains additional arrangements for young people aged fourteen to sixteen.
Clinical care
Spanish gender care is provided in regional Unidades de Tratamiento de Identidad de Género (UTIG). Access and waiting times differ significantly between autonomous regions.
Debate
The drafting of the law led to public debate, including within the governing coalition and feminist organisations, about the consequences for minors' access to changing their gender registration.
