Hair transplant during transition
In trans women, hair transplantation can be used to correct a masculine receding hairline or with androgenic alopecia.
Indications
In trans women, hair transplantation can be used to correct a masculine receding hairline or with androgenic alopecia. In trans men it is sometimes used for beard hair transplantation.
Techniques
The two main techniques are FUT (follicular unit transplantation, a strip from the back of the head) and FUE (follicular unit extraction, individual hair follicles). Both move hair from a donor zone — usually the back of the head — to the recipient area.
Combination with medication
Results of hair transplantation improve when ongoing hair loss is inhibited with medication (for example with finasteride). The procedure is rarely reimbursed from basic insurance in the Netherlands.
