Health insurance and gender care in the Netherlands
Many components of transgender care fall under the basic insurance in the Netherlands, provided the care is medically necessary and conditions are met.
Basic insurance
Many components of transgender care fall under the basic insurance in the Netherlands, provided the care is medically necessary and conditions are met. These include intake and diagnostics at a recognised gender clinic, hormone therapy, hair removal in the surgical area, gender-affirming surgery and — with medical indication — fertility preservation.
Deductible and personal contribution
The statutory deductible applies to most care. Some care, such as voice training outside a speech therapy practice or cosmetic corrections without medical indication, falls outside the basic insurance.
Waiting times and referral
Access to reimbursed care runs via a general practitioner and a recognised gender centre. Waiting times at Dutch gender clinics have been long for years.
