Amnesty International and trans rights
Amnesty International has campaigned for LGBTQI rights, and specifically for transgender rights, since the start of the twenty-first century.
Position
Amnesty International has campaigned for LGBTQI rights, and specifically for transgender rights, since the start of the twenty-first century. The organisation stresses that transgender people must be protected under existing human rights standards, among other things against violence, unequal treatment and coerced medical procedures for legal recognition.
Reports
Amnesty publishes country reports addressing the situation of transgender people, for example on violence in Latin America, prisons in Turkey and legal recognition in Poland and Russia.
Debate
Amnesty has explicitly opposed bans on transgender care for young people in the US and the UK, among others. This position is criticised by some feminist and critical groups.
