Current
Recent developments in gender care and policy — in the Netherlands and worldwide.
The policy field around gender and gender care is changing rapidly. In recent years, several European countries — Sweden, Finland, the United Kingdom, Denmark and Norway — have substantially adjusted their policy for minors after new scientific evaluations. The UK Cass Review (2024) led to a ban on puberty blockers outside research settings in the NHS. In the United States, policy proceeds in a strongly polarised way along party lines, while in Australia and Germany new legislation has been introduced.
In the Netherlands, the adjustment of policy is proceeding more slowly than in surrounding countries. The original Dutch Protocol is still largely followed, while international criticism of the scientific underpinning is growing. At the same time, in 2023 and 2024 various critical publications appeared in Dutch media about the care model, the waiting lists, and the experiences of people who have detransitioned.
This section gathers the most important developments in the Netherlands and abroad — legislation, policy reports, clinical guidelines, media coverage and court rulings. The information is regularly updated on the basis of public sources, with explicit source attribution for each event.
