HP/De Tijd

HP/De Tijd is an independent Dutch opinion magazine. It was founded in September 1990 through the merger of the opinion weekly Haagse Post and the Catholic weekly De Tijd. The magazine was initially published weekly and later ten times a year. Since 2022, it has been published by Stichting Het Vrije Woord, after being owned by Audax for many years.

More about this on this site: HP/De Tijd — “I-I-I don’t dare take responsibility for this!” (2023).

What you will find

The magazine and website publish interviews, reports, columns and in-depth features on politics, culture and society. On gender, HP/De Tijd published, among other things, an interview with a young man who reversed his transition and criticized the support provided by gender clinics. gendermedia.nl describes why detransition received little media attention for a long time.

Why it is on this list

HP/De Tijd is one of the Dutch media outlets that has provided space for critical views on gender care and personal accounts of regret. These are journalistic stories about individual cases, not research into how often regret occurs. Coverage of the subject in the Dutch press can be found under media and public debate; another Dutch outlet on this list is PowNed. See also detransition and developments in the Netherlands.

History and ownership

In the first years after the merger, the magazine was owned by Hollandse Pers Unie and VNU, according to Wikipedia. From 1995 to 2022, Audax was the sole owner. On 29 March 2022, HP/De Tijd continued independently. Until 2012, it was a weekly; since then, it has been published ten times a year. The first editor-in-chief was Ad 's-Gravesande. Tom Kellerhuis has been in charge since 2014. Circulation fell from more than 51,000 copies in 1993 to nearly 15,000 in 2021, with a temporary increase after the switch to monthly publication.

Contributors and sections

Over the years, contributors to the magazine have included Martin Bril, Theo van Gogh, Ischa Meijer, Herman Pleij and Max Pam. The website has sections for current affairs, politics, life, columns and opinion, and culture and media, as well as a podcast. Some articles are marked as premium and can only be read by subscribers.

How to assess this source

The pieces on gender in HP/De Tijd are interviews and opinion pieces. An interview presents one person’s experience and account, while a column expresses an opinion. For figures on regret and on healthcare practice in the Netherlands, it is better to consult research and policy documents, such as the Amsterdam UMC study of young people referred to a gender clinic. The article on the Dutch Protocol and the overview under science and debate provide a starting point for this.
