Trans Widows Voices
Trans Widows Voices is a British women’s group that shares the experiences of women whose male partner or husband has come to identify as a woman or has transitioned. The group uses the term trans widow because, according to the site, these women often describe feeling as though their partner has died.
What you can find
The site contains personal stories, practical advice, frequently asked questions, a list of resources, a news section and guidance on staying safe online. It also has a page about what the site calls the spousal exit clause. The group explicitly states that it is not currently a support group.
Why it is included on this list
The site highlights the position of partners, which receives little attention in the debate. Its choice of language is controversial: the site refers to partners using the pronouns associated with their sex at birth, and the term trans widow is also controversial. See also society and legal.
The spousal exit clause
The provision is set out in the UK Gender Recognition Act 2004 and applies in England and Wales. The Scottish attempt to relax that law is archived under the Scottish Gender Recognition Reform Bill. It gives a spouse the option of ending the marriage before their partner receives a full gender recognition certificate. The site quotes the parliamentary Women and Equalities Committee, which wrote in March 2022 that marriage is an agreement between two people whose nature cannot be changed without the consent of both. According to the group, the provision is not a veto on transition. A partner can also change their name, passport and driving licence without consent; only changing the birth certificate through a full certificate requires the spouse’s consent. The group further points out that the provision offers a way out for women who cannot divorce for religious or cultural reasons. Stonewall criticises the provision. The group says statements by Labour and the Liberal Democrats around the 2024 election are concerning because, in its view, the right is under pressure.
Definition and approach
The site defines a trans widow as a woman, usually heterosexual, whose male partner or husband believes they have a gender identity other than that of a man or engages in cross-dressing. The stories appear under first names, such as Abigail's Story and Naeferty's Story. The homepage does not say who runs the group. According to the site, a support group may be something for the future, if time and resources allow.
How to use and assess this source
The stories are personal accounts from one side of a relationship. They cannot be verified and say nothing about how common such experiences are. They do, however, show what questions partners have. How this is regulated in the Netherlands is explained under marriage and transition. Explanations of the terms used can be found under terminology.
