Transregret
TransRegret is an American information website aimed at young people and adults who are questioning or regretting a transition. Contrary to what its name suggests, it is not a collection of personal testimonies. The site was created by two organizations: the American College of Pediatricians and the Ruth Institute.
What you can find there
The site consists of short informational texts about the potential risks of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones, a page with references to the literature, a downloadable version of the material, and advice on seeking a second opinion and choosing a therapist.
Why it is included on this list
The source of the information matters to anyone reading the site. The American College of Pediatricians is a small, socially conservative advocacy organization, not the major American professional association of pediatricians; the Ruth Institute is a religiously inspired organization. The site’s categorical claims are controversial and differ from generally accepted guidelines. Background information is available under medical and detransition.
The organizations behind it
The American College of Pediatricians was founded in 2002 by a group of pediatricians, including Joseph Zanga, a former president of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Its founding was a protest against the academy’s support for adoption by same-sex couples. In 2012, the Southern Poverty Law Center estimated that it had no more than 200 members. Leaked documents showed in 2023 that it had approximately 700 active members. On its website, the organization describes itself as an association of pediatricians and other healthcare providers committed to the health and well-being of children. The Ruth Institute describes itself as an international, interfaith coalition that defends the family.
Criticism of the American College of Pediatricians
The Southern Poverty Law Center has designated the organization as a hate group. Francis Collins, then director of the National Institutes of Health, accused it of misleading children and parents. Several researchers have stated that the organization misrepresented their work. In 2023, more than 10,000 internal documents were exposed after an unsecured storage system was compromised. That same year, the organization was one of the plaintiffs in a lawsuit seeking to restrict access to the abortion pill mifepristone.
How to use and assess this source
The page about the organizations behind the site lists neither authors nor a date. Review the references yourself and compare the claims with the findings of systematic reviews on puberty blockers and hormones. A site with a similar name but a different background is Sex Change Regret.
