Laser Hair Removal During Transition

Laser hair removal uses light of a specific wavelength, which is absorbed by the melanin in the hair root.
How it works
Laser hair removal uses light of a specific wavelength, which is absorbed by the melanin in the hair root. The heat damages the hair follicle, reducing hair growth. It works best on dark hair and light skin; it is less effective for light or gray hair.
Treatment process
Effective beard hair removal requires multiple sessions — usually eight to twelve — spread over one to two years, because only hairs in the active growth phase respond. The result is a significant but rarely complete reduction; electrolysis is often used afterward for permanent removal.
Before genital surgery
When preparing for vaginoplasty using scrotal or perineal skin, complete hair removal from the skin to be transplanted is required to prevent hair growth in the neovagina. This is usually done with electrolysis, sometimes in combination with laser treatment.
Reimbursement in the Netherlands
Beard hair removal may be covered under the basic health insurance scheme under certain conditions in cases of diagnosed gender dysphoria. The conditions and number of reimbursed sessions vary by health insurer.
Types of equipment
Clinics use different types of lasers. The alexandrite laser and diode laser are most commonly used on light skin. The Nd:YAG laser penetrates deeper and is safer for dark skin. Flash lamps, known as IPL, are not lasers and work less selectively. The treatment is officially described as permanent hair-growth reduction; only electrolysis may be called permanent hair removal.
Side effects
After treatment, the skin is red and sensitive for several days. Burns, blisters, and permanent light or dark spots can occur, especially on tanned or darker skin and when equipment is incorrectly calibrated. In rare cases, hair growth in the treated area may actually increase. Avoid sun exposure before and after treatment, and have the procedure performed at a clinic under the supervision of a doctor.
Order and planning
Because laser treatment only works on dark hair, it is advisable to start before the beard turns gray. Many transgender women first have most of their beard treated with laser and then use electrolysis for the remaining light hairs. Hormones do not eliminate beard hair; see estrogen. Information about preparing for surgery can be found under vaginoplasty, and reimbursement information under health insurance and gender-affirming care.
