Center for Bioethics and Culture
The Center for Bioethics and Culture Network (CBC) is an American nonprofit organization focused on ethical questions in healthcare, biomedical research, and biotechnology. The organization was founded by nurse and bioethicist Jennifer Lahl and primarily works through documentaries, articles, and lectures.
What you can find
CBC is best known for films and publications about surrogacy, egg donation, and genetic technologies. The organization has also made documentaries about gender care: Trans Mission, The Detransition Diaries, and Lost Boys: Searching for Manhood. They feature, among others, people who came to regret their transition.
Why it is on this list
CBC approaches medical transition for minors from the perspective of medical ethics and takes a critical view of it. It is an advocacy organization with a clear position, not a neutral research institute. The films can be useful as an illustration of the critical side of the debate about medical treatment.
Organization and area of work
Jennifer Lahl is the founder and president, and Kallie Fell is the executive director. CBC has the U.S. tax status 501(c)(3) and refers to GuideStar for its financial information. Its mission is to educate the public, opinion leaders, and legislators about ethical issues in healthcare, biomedical research, and biotechnology. The website divides its subjects into two groups. Making Life covers reproductive technology, surrogacy, egg and sperm donation, and genetic testing. Faking Life covers cloning, human enhancement, CRISPR, and transhumanism. CBC runs the Stop Surrogacy Now campaign, produces the Venus Rising podcast, and has its own Ramsey Institute with fellows.
Films and book
The list of documentaries contains ten titles. Seven deal with reproduction and healthcare, including Eggsploitation, Anonymous Father's Day, Breeders, and #BigFertility. The three films about gender came later. Lost Boys: Searching for Manhood was released in 2024. The Detransition Diaries is accompanied by a book of the same name by Lahl and Fell, published by Ignatius Press in 2024. A Dutch-language review of the film and book can be found on transgemeenschap.nl. The posts from September 2026 on the website concern surrogacy and egg freezing. Reproduction is therefore still at the heart of the organization's work. Information on what a transition means for fertility can be found at egg freezing during transition.
How to weigh this source
The films about gender give a voice to people who regret their transition. Healthcare providers who defend this care and people who are satisfied with it feature little or not at all. They are advocacy pieces, not research into how common regret is. What is known about this can be found under detransition and systematic reviews of gender care.
