Binary Australia

Binary, also known as Binary Australia, is an Australian campaign organisation based in Sydney. The group was founded in 2015 as Marriage Alliance, which campaigned against opening up marriage to same-sex couples, and continued under its current name from 2018 onwards. Its spokesperson is Kirralie Smith.

What you can find

The website contains news reports, opinion pieces and petitions. Binary wants Australian legislation to be based on biological sex rather than gender identity, advocates separate facilities and sports competitions for women, and opposes medical treatment for minors with gender dysphoria. Information on how such care is regulated in the country can be found under gender care in Australia. See also the overview of policies by country.

Background and criticism

Binary is an activist group, not a scientific or journalistic source. In 2022, the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism classified the organisation as an anti-LGBTQ group. Its publications are therefore primarily useful for following the positions of this side of Australia’s social debate.

From Marriage Alliance to Binary

According to Wikipedia, Marriage Alliance was founded on 2 July 2015. In 2017, the group campaigned alongside the Coalition for Marriage for a no vote in Australia’s postal plebiscite on same-sex marriage. The television advertisements were broadcast on Foxtel after the Seven and Ten networks initially refused to air them. The group also produced material opposing the Safe Schools programme. The name change followed in November 2018. The website lists Gender Awareness Australia Limited as the legal entity, with an address on York Street in Sydney. The organisation solicits donations. In 2017, Damian Wyld was director of Marriage Alliance, as reported in a broadcast by the Australian public broadcaster ABC.

Legal cases

In August 2025, the Local Court of New South Wales found Binary and Kirralie Smith guilty of vilification—publicly treating Stephanie Blanch, a transgender footballer, with contempt. Smith was also held liable in the case involving a second player, Riley Dennis. The Supreme Court of New South Wales dismissed her appeal in July 2026. She was also subject to a restraining order. According to the Star Observer, the appeal judge described an ongoing campaign of belittling, harassing and intimidating behaviour. Binary itself reports that Smith is pursuing proceedings in the Australian High Court concerning the right to speak about biological sex and spaces for women.

How to assess this source

Binary says it opposes what it calls harmful gender theory and uses terms such as indoctrination. This is campaign language. In 2017, Marriage Alliance led the Coalition for Marriage together with the Australian Christian Lobby, the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney and the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, demonstrating its Christian-conservative origins. Facts about sports regulations can be found under gender and sport. Another Australian source on this list is the Human Rights Law Alliance. LGB Alliance Australia and the Gender Clinic News newsletter are also from Australia.
