EGGOE Österreich

EGGÖ stands for Europäische Gesellschaft für Geschlechtergerechtigkeit Österreich. The Austrian association argues that sex matters in rules, laws, language and culture and wants to broaden the debate on these issues. The subject therefore extends beyond children and families alone.

The main article on this subject is EGGÖ — Austrian association critical of self-identification.

What you can find

The German-language website covers topics including employment, statistics, healthcare, child protection and schools, freedom of speech, law, sport and the prison system. It includes a dossier on gender dysphoria in young people, an explanation of rapid-onset gender dysphoria and a reference to the Elterninitiative ROGD Österreich. There are also articles, book reviews and a newsletter archive.

Why it is on this list

The association advocates sex-segregated spaces and sport and is critical of medical treatment for minors. These are controversial positions in the debate on gender and society. The website is a source for the gender-critical perspective in Austria, not neutral information.

Foundation and organisation

EGGÖ was founded on 9 December 2022 and is based in Vienna. It is a non-profit association registered in the Austrian association register. All members work as volunteers. Membership is open to women and men. The association describes itself as independent and not affiliated with any political party. The names of board members are not listed on the page about the association, and that page also provides no information about its funding.

Goals and activities

The association identifies three goals. It wants to raise awareness of the consequences of laws that leave sex registration to self-determination. In neighbouring Germany, such a law has been in force since November 2024; see the article on the German self-identification law. It wants to draw policymakers’ attention to the interests that come into conflict as a result. And it wants to promote balanced information and debate about sex versus gender identity, with a focus on Austria. Healthcare in that country is discussed in gender-affirming care in Austria. To this end, EGGÖ organises its own meetings and public discussions, is active on social media, writes letters to newspaper editors and responds to legislative proposals. It is also building an information archive and sending out a newsletter.

Recent publications

In September 2026, the association posted a summary of the Athena report Unter der Oberfläche on gender identity in European policy and announced an Athena Forum meeting in parliament on 1 October. In July 2026, it published a review of a book by sociologist Rogers Brubaker on gender identity. In April 2026, two articles were published, one on sex-based women’s rights and the other on conversion therapy bans. The parent group referred to by the website has its own listing: ROGD Österreich. For more on women’s spaces, see trans people and women’s safety.
