Fox News

Fox News is an American news channel that launched in 1996 and is owned by Fox Corporation, the Murdoch family’s media company. The channel and its associated website are among the most watched and read news sources in the United States and have a distinctly conservative profile.

What you can find there

The website provides continuous news, video and opinion coverage. Fox News frequently reports on gender-related issues, including legislation in the states, sports, schools and care for minors. Parents, athletes and people who regret transitioning are regularly featured. One example of this kind of American news is the settlement requiring Texas Children's Hospital to open a detransition clinic. State-by-state rules are listed under gender-affirming care in the United States.

Background

Fox News’s reliability is controversial, particularly that of its opinion programs. In 2023, the company settled a defamation lawsuit brought by voting-machine manufacturer Dominion for more than $787 million. Reports are therefore best read alongside other sources. History

Fox News went on the air on October 7, 1996. Rupert Murdoch initiated the project and brought in Roger Ailes in February of that year to establish the channel. Its headquarters are located on Avenue of the Americas in New York. For years, the channel used the slogans Fair and Balanced and We Report. You Decide. According to a press release from the channel, Fox News overtook CNN in January 2002 as the most-watched news channel on American cable television. In 2019, an average of 1.4 million people watched it, rising to 2.5 million during evening hours, according to trade publication Adweek. At the beginning of 2012, the channel said it was available in more than 90 million American households. Well-known presenters included and include Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson and Megyn Kelly.

Controversies

Ailes left in 2016 following allegations of sexual harassment. Presenter Gretchen Carlson received a $20 million settlement. In 2017, O'Reilly also had to leave after settlements with several women became public. The settlement with Dominion in April 2023 amounted to $787.5 million and concerned claims made on the channel about the 2020 presidential election. Tucker Carlson left the channel shortly afterward.

How to assess this source

Distinguish between the news reports on the website and the presenters’ opinion programs. gendermedia.nl explains why this distinction matters in gender-related news. On gender-related topics, Fox News mainly selects stories and guests that highlight the critical perspective. A report about a law or court case can be useful as an indication, after which you can look up the law or ruling itself. Overviews can be found under policy by country and gender and sports.
