What you can find there
The website explains the BITE model, which describes control in groups along four dimensions: behavior, information, thoughts, and emotions. It also features courses, a blog, a podcast, and information about Hassan’s books and consulting services.
Why it is included on this list
Some participants in the gender debate use the BITE model to analyze group pressure and online communities. A site that approaches the gender debate from this perspective is described at Gendersekte.nl. This application is controversial, and the model itself has also been criticized: some sociologists of religion reject the underlying theory of mind control. For context, see science and debate and society.
Hassan’s life and career
Hassan was born in Flushing, in the New York City borough of Queens, and grew up in a Jewish family. At nineteen, while studying at Queens College, he was recruited by the Unification Church. He remained a member for two and a half years and took on a leadership role in the student organization CARP. In 1976, he was involved in a car accident after working for two days without sleep. His parents subsequently hired deprogrammers, who worked with him for five days. In 1979, he founded Ex-Moon Inc., followed by the Freedom of Mind Resource Center in 1999. He earned a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Cambridge College in 1985 and later received a doctorate from Fielding Graduate University.
Books and services
Combating Cult Mind Control was published in 1988. It was followed by Releasing the Bonds (2000), Freedom of Mind (2012), and The Cult of Trump (2019). In addition to the BITE model, Hassan uses the Influence Continuum, a framework that distinguishes ethical influence from destructive control. The center offers support for former members and families, interventions, expert testimony in legal proceedings, workshops, and training programs. The website presents Hassan as America’s leading cult expert.
How to assess this source
The website is also the showcase for a consulting practice. Its homepage contains no articles about gender. The application of the model to the gender debate comes from others and touches on the discussion of social influence surrounding rapid-onset gender dysphoria.
