LGB Alliance Australia
LGB Alliance Australia is an Australian advocacy organisation for lesbian, gay and bisexual people, based in Surry Hills in the state of New South Wales. The group says it advocates for sex-based rights and recognition of same-sex attraction.
What you can find
The website contains news and commentary on Australian policy, including legislation against conversion practices and the funding of gender surgeries. It also features book reviews, campaigns, an events calendar and information about membership. Another Australian group that wants legislation to be based on biological sex is the campaign organisation Binary Australia.
Background
The group is controversial. In 2022, Tasmania’s Anti-Discrimination Commissioner rejected a request to exclude trans women from certain events. Critics classify the organisation as part of the anti-trans movement; the organisation itself says that sexual orientation and gender identity involve different interests. Aims and principles
The organisation’s page lists four aims: promoting the rights of lesbian, gay and bisexual people; strengthening the voice of lesbian women and highlighting the double discrimination they experience; protecting children from ideas telling them that their personality or body needs to change; and promoting free debate on these issues. The group states that biological sex is real and immutable and is observed, not assigned, and describes itself as standing for truth and science. Its members say they have devoted their lives to campaigning for equal rights in Australia. The page does not state a founding year or legal structure, nor does it name board members or spokespeople, and it contains no information about funding.
Recent contributions
At the end of September 2026, the group published three pieces that provide a good insight into its approach. It submitted a response to an application for gender surgeries to be covered through the public Medicare system and advised the committee assessing the application to reject it. It criticised a Tasmanian bill against conversion practices, arguing that sexual orientation is defined in terms of gender rather than sex and that healthcare professionals could face risks. It also reviewed an anthology about the influence of gender ideology on the gay rights movement. The same Tasmanian bill is also being challenged by the Human Rights Law Alliance.
How to assess this source
According to the Australian news site Star Observer, the US organisation Global Project Against Hate and Extremism included the group in a 2022 report on hate and extremist groups in Australia. The group is affiliated with the British LGB Alliance. Its submissions are useful for understanding the objections raised in Australian legislative processes, but they represent one side of a divided community.
